Mythological Sculptures
These new sculptural works are a departure and an extension of my functional wheel thrown vessels. They are the result of my travels in Greece over the past several years, and my time spent at the Mudhouse Art Residency in Crete. There I created small “models” which turned into larger sculptures when I returned to my California studio. Absorbing the Greek landscape, culture, language and traces of ancient civilizations, as well as reflecting on my own ancestral heritage with family ties in the Peloponnese region has led me to this body of work.
My intention is not to represent any specific myth, but rather to create a personal and universal expression of states of being. Almost all the works are named with a verb and describe an action or a feeling.
This series is built by hand using coils of clay and fired in a large scale “anagama” wood kiln with the team at Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology. The pieces are fired without glaze to a high temperature of 2340’ F and the kiln must be stoked with wood day and night. The resulting natural surfaces of melted wood ash, texture from coals and flame markings compliment and enhance the primal nature of the forms.
